Will HTML5 Apps Kill the Native Application?

As more developers begin to use HTML5 to create web applications, some have predicted that the future will be dominated by HTML5 apps, and native applications will be the exception, rather than the rule.

Many people do not think of Microsoft when it comes to leading open standards, but Paul Cotton, Microsoft’s director of web services standards strategy, is also the co-chairman of W3C’s HTML Working Group. He believes that any type of app can be created using HTML5, and that the language can be used to create apps that are both cross-platform and work across devices.

Cotton reiterated the concept, stating that “I think you are going to see some really rich applications based on the HTML language and the kinds of APIs that are being developed at the W3C, such as WebSockets.”
