Stats have shown that use of Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (IE 6) web browser has dropped below five percent for the first time. Web developers are happy to see the decline, announcing that it can’t happen quick enough.
Web analytics company StatCounter stated that in the month of May, IE 6’s browser share went down to 4.7 percent. The company’s research department, StatCounter Global Stats indicated that IE 6 usage was at 11.5 percent just a year ago.
Industry support for the browser has been dwindling, as Google Reader, YouTube, Google Docs and the Google browser phase out support for IE 6. Microsoft is also phasing out support for aging technology, announcing that IE 9 will not run on Windows XP, encouraging folks to upgrade instead.
