Google Announces Release of Webm, Developer Release of Chrome

Google today announced the release of the latest developer channel version of its Chrome web browser, with support for the open Webm VP8 video codecs. Once the developer build of Chrome is stable enough, Google will release the first public beta.

This release of the WebKit-based browser, Version 6.0.422.0, includes fixes for a bug that causes the browser to crash when changing networks, and also includes several Mac and Linux specific bug fixes.

Industry speculators are concerned that the open source WebM, Ogg Vorbis and VP8 video codecs may get tangled up in a lawsuit bought about by the MPEG-LA film industry licensing organization that has control of many video formats and codec patents.
