Taxonomy Basics for Businesses, Websites and Organizations

Taxonomy can be thought of as a way of organizing terms and terminology, and if you aren’t using it for your website, small business or organization, you are missing out on a useful tool. Here are a few taxonomy guidelines to get you started.

Although more businesses and websites are recognizing the importance of taxonomy, information management systems still haven’t caught up with the need for decent taxonomy tools. If you consider the most popular content management systems (CMS) in use, such as SharePoint, Documentum, OpenText, Drupal, etc., if they have taxonomy functionality, it is meager at best.

SharePoint 2010 does include a taxonomy maintenance tool called the Term Store. If the CMS you are using has a taxonomy maintenance tool, use it! If there is one available as an add-on for your CMS, download it, install it, and most importantly, begin to use it on a regular basis.
