Web developers who are actively utilizing the open standard HTML, CSS, and JavaScript should be interested in the announcement by Symbian. Its mobile platform, Symbian 3 enables developers to use those standards to create software for hardware such as Nokia’s N8 and other Symbian 3 devices.
Symbian’s web application development tools are currently available for Mac, Linux and Windows computers, and are supplemental for the Qt cross-platform framework which currently supports development for Symbian devices.
Larry Berkin, head of Global Alliances and U.S. GM of the Symbian Foundation, indicated that the limitations of low-level programming languages won’t be a problem with the new Symbian tools due to the many accessible APIs that are available. “Using APIs, developers can access the dialer, calendar, camera, contacts and more.”
