Microsoft recently announced the release of its WebMatrix 2.0 beta, with the hope that web developers will be encouraged to utilize Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform-as-a-service (PaaS) along with it. .NET programmers are already with the program, but Linux, Perl, Ruby, Python and Java programmers are still sitting undecided on the Azure fence.
A blogger for Microsoft described WebMatrix 2.0 in basic web development terminology, stating that it is “an all-in-one tool you can use to download, install and tweak and publish a website based on an open source app like WordPress, Umbraco, Drupal,…OR program your own site with an easy-to-use Razor syntax and ASP.NET Web Pages” but there was no mention of Azure PaaS.
Many developers consider Azure PaaS to be a bit over the top for what they really need, preferring instead to deploy on other cloud services such as Amazon Web Services IaaS or VMware’s Cloud Foundry. If Microsoft can provide enough reasons for developers to recognize the merits of using Azure PaaS with WebMatrix 2.0, they may gain more ground.
