With Microsoft’s March release of Internet Explorer 9, developers and end users had something to celebrate. IE9 opens the doors to complex multimedia applications built using one of the core building blocks of the web, HTML5.
By using HTML5, developers are able to create applications that run inside the web browser, even though they may be cloud-hosted, i.e. Google Docs. The distinction between native apps and browser-based apps may become even more blurred, as apps written in HTML5 are able to take advantage of some of the features of mobile devices.
Before the use of HTML5 became prevalant, developers would have to rely on plug-ins, or lots of JavaScript. HTML5 specifies a large range of capabilities and functionality that is built into the browser. Apps are able to directly invoke these capabilities through commands, and don’t have to rely on the network.
