Today the BBC iPlayer website announced its new iPlayer for TV, which is initially available for the PS3 games console. The iPlayer uses HTML5 and JavaScript to deliver an interactive television-like experience via the web browser.
The folks at iPlayer worked to create a user interface that is visually rich, creating an impact for those experiencing the app on their TV. Through the use of the four directional and Enter keys found on most television remotes, users can control every aspect and function of the iPlayer app.
iPlayer is working on a version of its player that will work on new TV devices that utilize Adobe Flash and Air technology. The developers of the iPlayer believe that the increasing use of web standards for playing media is what allowed them to create and deploy the iPlayer so quickly.
