Back in the 1990's, Tim Berners-Lee announced his vision of a "semantic web" that would help people find exactly the information, solution or product they were looking for. So why haven't online businesses embraced the semantic web?
Online retailers gained a solid 15% in sales this past holiday season, with Black Friday and Cyber Monday setting all-time records. The CTO of Ebags.com, Chris Cummings, believes his company's use of semantic-based software was a large reason they were able to increase sales, reporting that "Since it was deployed, our conversion rates have doubled."
The semantic software required them to provide high quality, detailed descriptions of products and the attributes of those products. This helped them to get a higher ranking on search engines, which helped Ebags to makes those sales.
