Networking giant Cisco has updated its Visual Networking Index (VNI) with new predictions. The company forecasts that by 2021, there will be 4.6 billion Internet users, up from 3.3 billion in 2016. And total Internet traffic four years from now will top 3.3 zettabytes, up from 1.2 zettabytes last year.
The company pegs much of the Internet growth on the Internet of Things (IoT), and it believes that machine-to-machine (M2M) connections will account for half of all connections by 2021.
In addition, the VNI says average WiFi speeds worldwide will double from 18.2M bps in 2016 to 37.1M bps for 2021.
