The New York Times Unveils Troll-Fighting Moderator Technology

The New York Times has unveiled a new tool called Moderator that automates analysis of article comments. Until recently, the paper employed a team of 14 people to read through and approve as many as 12,000 comments per day before posting them to its website. Moderator, developed in partnership with Alphabet subsidiary Jigsaw is now handling about 20 percent of comments.

The technology appears to be related to a tool called Perspective that Google announced back in February. It aims to detect “toxic” comments by finding those that are similar to those flagged by moderators as objectionable. Experts say Moderator still isn’t perfect and has more learning to do, but it could mark a turning point in the way websites handle comments from readers.
