Most businesses realize that if they are to be taken seriously, they need to have a website. Many of these same businesses are under the impression that creating a website is costly or difficult--or both. Others have found that by using free web development tools, they can simplify the development process and reduce the costs to little or nothing.

There are hundreds of content management systems (CMS) available, and many of them are open source, meaning they are free for you to download and use to create your website. The most popular open source content management systems are Drupal, Joomla! and Wordpress. Each of them is highly capable of being used to create a business website, and they are all extensible--that is, by adding free (or paid) plug-ins or modules, you can add functionality to them that is not available out of the package. And lastly, they each have their own learning curve, with Wordpress being the easiest to learn, Joomla! coming in next, and Drupal being the most difficult to master.
