Palm Releases webOS 2.0, SDK to Developers

Sep 1, 2010

Palm today announced that the beta version of its webOS 2.0 software development kit (SDK) is now available for developers. New features include an expanded universal search that developers can use, along with new HTML 5 features and enhancements.

One of the most important new features is “Stacks” which has been touted as the “next-generation of multitasking.” The new feature, which expands on the concepts of “cards” from the first version of the webOS, which can be seen on the Palm Pre, allows users to group related cards in stacks, which allows them to reduce the clutter on their mobile desktop.

Obviously a response to Apple’s iOS 4 and Google’s Android 2.2, webOS 2.0 is the first major update to the webOS platform since Palm was acquired by HP for $1.2 billion previously this year. Palm plans to appear on an HP-built iPad competitor soon, as HP has already indicated that they are interested in a webOS-based touchscreen tablet.
