The Open Source Joomla CMS 1.6 beta was released today by the Joomla Project. This release includes a new access control panel, simplified extension updates and other changes designed to make the the product a more compelling solution for web developers.

The Joomla Project issued a statement about new features in the beta release of its free, PHP-based content management system: "New features and capabilities – such as the hierarchical design of the access control system, semantic XHTML layouts and one-click extension updates – usher in a new set of tools that open doors for more effective online engagements. Whether building a personal Website or a next-generation Web application for an enterprise environment, Joomla 1.6 offers the most compelling solution for easily building and managing powerful online solutions."

Joomla is the most popular open source content management system in the industry, according to Open Source Matters, a non-profit organization whose stated goal is "to ensure the Joomla project and future projects continue to exist beyond the participation of individual volunteers". Biased opinions aside, the CMS is used by Citibank, IHOP, Harvard University and many other popular websites and does have a very large developer community.
