Websites To Communicate Verbally Thanks to HTML 5

If the new activity group in the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has its way, websites may eventually communicate verbally with visitors using the features of HTML 5. The W3C is looking into the possibility of incorporating voice recognition and speech synthesis interfaces iuto the web experience.

The new incubator group, called the HTML Speech Incubator Group, is supposed to file a report in 2011 which details the feasibility of adding voice and speech features into HTML 5. Many industry players, including AT&T, Google, Microsoft and the Mozilla Foundation, are participating in the effort.

In particular, the group is going to determine the feasibility of creating a standard web interface for speech recognition and synthesis that should be able to be used across browsers. The W3C will also be releasing version 1.1 of SSML (Speech Synthesis Markup Language), which is used in conjunction with VoiceXML.
