W3C Announces CSS 2.1 As Official Web Standard

The announcement from the W3C this week that CSS 2.1 is now officially the web standard may surprise some developers. Cascading Style Sheets 3 (CSS3) is currently a hot topic on this site and others, so much so that one may get the impression that it is already the web standard that is used for web page formatting.

Similar to last week’s announcement that HTML5 had reached the “last call” stage in its evolution, CSS 2.1 this week reached “recommendation” stage. While the rest of the industry looks towards CSS3, the W3C sees the completion of the CSS 2.1 standard is important, as it has been a long effort towards interoperability.

Once the CSS 2.1 project is completed, the W3C CSS Working Group will begin working on additional features for CSS3.
