The man known as the inventor of the Web, Tim Berners-Lee, along with researcher Nigel Shadbolt, got a grant for $45 million from the British government to build a Semantic Web. The two worked together to build data.gov.uk and will continue with that project.
Berners-Lee has mentioned in the past that the pieces were in place to build the semantic web, which is based on providing structured meaning and clear links between unstructured elements on the web.
He has previously described his vision of the semantic web, stating that he has “a dream for the Web [in which computers] become capable of analyzing all the data on the Web – the content, links, and transactions between people and computers. A ‘Semantic Web’, which should make this possible, has yet to emerge, but when it does, the day-to-day mechanisms of trade, bureaucracy and our daily lives will be handled by machines talking to machines. The ‘intelligent agents’ people have touted for ages will finally materialize.”
