WebKit, a layout engine used by many mobile devices and web browsers, allows web developers to create mobile websites with CMS functionality. With a mobile CMS available, developers can create, edit and delete web content–while on the go.
While we already have the iPhone, Android, Blackberry and mobile VPN support, are we at the point where developers can edit and work on websites while remaining mobile? This year Automattic released WordPress for Android (also available for the iPhone), which enables developers to create and edit blog posts, pages and comments on a WordPress blog.
While the app has somewhat limited functionality, such as the lack of ability to create new categories, it still allows a publisher to manage their blog. A Drupal app for the iPhone is also available, with similar limited functionality. The apps are coming–but thus far their limitations are such that, except for limited circumstances, most developers will opt for their laptop rather than their mobile device.
