The latest build for the Chrome browser in the Chrome “Dev” Channel on Android makes an interesting change to the layout. Instead of having the controls, including the address bar and menu, at the top, the new design moves them to the bottom of the screen. The layout aims to be more ergonomic on smartphones with exceptionally large screens where it is difficult to reach the top of the screen while holding the device with one hand.
The change seems small but it could represent a significant departure in the way that websites are designed for mobile devices. If screen sizes continue to expand, controls at the bottom could become an industry standard.
