HTML5 Plus JavaScript Equals Game Boy Web App

Imran Nazar, a 26-year-old developer from the UK has created a project that’s creating quite a stir. His project, which is named jsGB, enables a web browser to emulate Nintendo’s Game Boy handheld game console using HTML5 and JavaScript.

Nazar blogged about his project in a blog on Mozilla’s gaming site, stating that “New JavaScript engines such as [Firefox 4’s JaegerMonkey] mean much higher speeds for the core processing, more than enough to cover emulation of a basic system.”

He also discussed HTML5’s Canvas element, which allows developers to control a two-dimensional graphical display, asking “Why write a console emulator? It’s a good way to learn the ins and outs of a particular console, and excellent for bringing together the lowest and highest levels of development. And why build a console emulator in the browser, using JavaScript and HTML5? I say: why not?”
