Apple Says It Supports Open Standards: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, H.264

Just as Adobe mentions that they will no longer be supporting their iPhone developer tools, Apple is on the defensive. Apple says that it is they who are supporting open standards such as HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, H.264, and that Adobe’s Flash is not an open standard.

Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller got right to the point in a statement released this week, stating that “Someone has it backwards—it is HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and H.264 (all supported by the iPhone and iPad) that are open and standard, while Adobe’s Flash is closed and proprietary.”

While it is true that Apple is supporting the latest open standards, Adobe’s Flash Player also supports the H.264 video codec, and its AIR technology includes support for HTML and CSS through the use of the WebKit browser that Apple’s Safari web browser is based upon.
