Rhomobile Releases Rhodes 2.2 Mobile App Development Framework

By HTMLGoodies Staff

Today Rhomobile announced the release of Rhodes 2.2, its cross-platform, mobile app development framework. Rhodes allows developers to create native apps for all major smartphones, including iPhone, Windows Mobile, Android, BlackBerry and Symbian.

Developers can download Rhodes 2.2 for free, as it falls under the MIT license. Adam Blum, CEO of Rhomobile, was excited about the release, stating that "Rhodes provides developers with a flexible and robust framework for building information-rich applications for all smartphones. With Rhodes 2.2 we expand our support of native device capabilities, while making it easy to implement Android's efficient cloud-based push technology."

What is unique about Rhodes is that is allows developers to create apps using HTML, JavaScript and Ruby, rather than Objective-C, the traditional programming language used to create iOS apps. Rhodes converts the code into native code, at which point the app can be added to the App Store where users can download it. This release also supports Android Cloud to Device Messaging, a feature that many developers have expressed interest in.
