Spil Games Jumps Into Debate, Stands Behind HTML 5

Spil Games today announced that it will be using the HTML 5 standard for the creation of web-based mobile games. With over 130 million users, the adoption of the emerging standard by the gaming company indicates that the future of web apps may lie in standard web technologies, rather than proprietary technologies such as Flash.

Spil Games is hoping to lure developers to the HTML 5 cause by holding a development contest with a $50,000 prize for the winning entry. The contest will run for six months, and the winners will have their games posted on Spil Games’ sites.

The company believes that HTML 5 is the future of mobile gaming, with games using technology based on open standards. They believe the “walled garden” approach that some developers have taken tie the developer’s work to a specific platform. By using HTML 5, a developer can develop once and deploy on many platforms.
