Apple’s Safari 5: A Dozen New HTML 5 Features

Along with all the other announcements at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, Apple announced the release of its Safari 5 web browser. This release includes support for a dozen new features of HTML 5, something web developers are eager to hear.


Safari 5 is said to feature a 30% performance increase, includes the Safari Reader for viewing single and multi-page articles using a new scrollable viewpoint. The browser is three percent faster than Chrome 5.0, and twice as fast as Firefox 3.6, according to Apple.


Developers were happy to hear about support for more than a dozen HTML 5 features that are supported. Geared towards the development of media-rich experiences, these features include full screen playback and closed captions for HTML video, HTML Geolocation, HTML sectioning elements, HTML draggable attributes, HTML forms validation, HTML Ruby, AJAX history, EventSource and WebSocket.
