Top 10 Rules for Building Successful Web Applications

Feb 24, 2010

Everyone wants their application to be successful, but it can be difficult to know where to start. Union Square Ventures’ Fred Wilson fills in the gaps, and tells us his top 10 tips for building successful web applications.

Wilson gave the opening presentation this morning at Future of Web Apps, a developer event in Miami. The focus of his top 10 items for a successful web application was:

  • Speed
  • Instant Utility
  • Voice
  • Less is more
  • Programmable
  • Personal
  • Make it RESTful
  • Discoverable
  • Clean
  • Playful

Wilson also gave one extra tip: “don’t hire a marketing person.” He feels that product marketing has to come from within your group, and should remain separate from guerrilla marketing. Good advice from an industry pro.
