The mobile development industry has seen a lot of changes over the last year. The Symbian Foundation has closed shop, and the Android market has rapidly grown, surpassing the Apple iOS and BlackBerry to become the 2nd biggest player in the market.
The developer mindshare has moved away from previous leaders such as Symbian, BlackBerry and Java to embrace Apple’s iOS and Android. Research in 2010 has shown that almost 60 percent of the 400-plus developers surveyed had developed Android apps, with Apple’s iOS taking second place, and Java ME following in third place.
A large disparity exists between the number of handsets that have been sold and the number of apps that are currently available for those handsets. In the third quarter of 2010, the two platforms with the lowest market penetration, iOS and Android, have the most apps available for purchase and download.
