Survey Finds Mixed Opinions on Net Neutrality Rules

May 12, 2017

NCTA—The Internet & Television Association, the primary lobbying group for the cable industry, has released the results of a new survey which appears to both support and oppose the industry’s stance against to the FCC’s net neutrality rules. Among those surveyed, 61 percent said they “strongly” or “somewhat” support net neutrality rules that say ISPs “cannot block, throttle, or prioritize certain content on the Internet.” By comparison 18 percent opposed those rules, while 21 percent said they didn’t know or had no opinion. However, when asked “When it comes to the role of the federal government in regulating access to the Internet, which of the following comes closest to your view, even if none are exactly right?” 53 percent of respondents selected, “The government should have a light-touch approach to the Internet that allows regulators to monitor the marketplace and take action if consumers are harmed.” And only 12 percent chose, “The government should have the ability to set specific prices, terms, and conditions for Internet access.”

The report says the survey results demonstrate strong support for the cable industry’s position on net neutrality, but observers point out that the survey also found strong support for the FCC’s current net neutrality rules.
