Opera Opens TV-based App Store With HTML5-based Apps

Jan 11, 2012

This week Opera Software announced the opening of the Opera TV Store, another newcomer to the online app store arena. Opera TV Store features HTML5-based apps for internet-connected TVs, and is available for OEMs, developers and content providers.

The apps that will be sold at the Opera TV Store are based on HTML5, and will run in television devices that are connected to the internet. The apps will allow users to access, for example, content on social networks such as Facebook, and services such as Vimeo, and will be optimized for HD-ready screens and remote controls.

The CEO of Opera, Lars Boilesen, discussed the Opera TV Store, stating that “We had a simple idea that, in order to bring apps to the world of TV in a huge way, you need to provide users with a lean-back Web experience—and developers, content providers and manufacturers with the most convenient, cross-platform technology. With the Opera TV Store, we’ve done it, and given the world of TV more possibilities and entertainment options at the same time.”
