Open Source A Boost for Businesses, Says Drupal Founder

Acquia co-founder Dries Buytaert, who was also the founder of Drupal, the open source content management system (CMS), is confident about the open source business model. Drupal has gone from an experiment with new technologies into a worldwide group project with a huge community of developers.

Sites that use Drupal include the White House, Harvard and MTV. Buytaert’s Acquia, which sells software and products that leverage Drupal, is among many companies that are profiting from Drupal.

Speaking to Mashable, Buytaert stated that it’s largely the community of developers that make Drupal a successful project. “In the case of Drupal, it’s really the community of people who are contributing to the project. We have a large community; we have thousands of developers, and each of those developers helps design modules. Just to give you an idea, we have 7,000 modules on the website. And it’s the fact that all of these people contribute these modules that allows us to get both scale and reach.”
