YouTube announces early support for the HTML5 <video> tag and how it performed compared to Flash and at that time, the limitations that held HTML5 back from becoming the preferred platform for video delivery. Most importantly HTML5 had lacked the required support for Adaptive Bitrate (ABR) which provides more videos with less buffering. YouTube has now announced that it has officially transitioned to the newly-published HTML5 standard as its default video player, and away from the older proprietary Adobe Flash standard.
