When Microsoft releases the Windows 8 operating system, it will come with many new bells and whistles–but no Flash. It’s Metro web browser will not support any third party plugins, which means Adobe Flash will likely be replaced by other technologies such as HTML5, JavaScript and CSS3.
According to the leader of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer team, Dean Hachamovitch, the Windows 8 “Metro style browser” is plugin free, is “as HTML5-only as possible,” and that “the experience that plug-ins provide today is not a good match with Metro style browsing and the modern HTML5 web.”
Developers took the statement as a further indication that Microsoft plans to ditch Silverlight, since the Metro browser won’t be supporting the multimedia technology either. Adobe has already seen the writing on the wall, and is heavily pushing its own Air and HTML5 authoring tools that allow developers to create Flash-like animations using HTML5.
