This week a new player in the mobile OS arena was announced by Mozilla, who will be releasing its own open source, web-based mobile operating system called Boot to Gecko. Boot to Gecko will use the Gecko layout engine along with some components from Google’s Android OS.
Boot to Gecko (B2G) source code will be released in “real-time” by Mozilla, and any additions that are approved will be presented to a standards group. The idea of using web-based applications to close the gap between mobile and desktop computers is not unique–the Chrome OS and Chrome web browser are already doing it.
