Microsoft has finally released a whitepaper which describes the ASP.NET platform for creating web applications, as well as how it fits in with the .NET Framework. ASP.NET developers have a head start since Sharepoint 2010 is based on ASP.NET, and this document goes on to tell why a developer would be wise to use SharePoint to develop such applications rather than just using basic ASP.NET.
