Using Federal Communications Commission (FCC) data, a group of researchers have determined that 10.6 million U.S. households do not have any wired access to Internet service with at least 25 Mbps, and 46.1 million households have only one option for an ISP providing that level of service. After accounting for homes served by fixed wireless providers, approximately 50 million households have one or fewer broadband providers in their area. To put that in perspective, there are 118 million households in the United States.
The report suggests that regulatory rule changes could make it financially feasible for more ISPs to offer service in rural areas, opening up broadband access to more households.
