Twitter’s GeoAPI debuted when Twitter bought Mixer Labs in 2009, and developers have been using it ever since. That ends this month, as the social media company has announced that they will no longer allow access to the API for outside developers.
Tweets, Flickr photos and even the iPhone SDK were all supported via the GeoAPI, which combined a places database of 16 million businesses with a reverse geo-coder. Twitter cited the increasing difficulty of maintaining the API for its demise.
The GeoAPI is different from Twitter’s Geotagging API, which has not been affected by this decision. The company plans to shut down the GeoAPI on March 31 and has already migrated most of the GeoAPI functionality over to the Twitter API.
