New Facebook Mobile Site Based on XHP, Javelin and WURFL

Apr 4, 2011

Facebook fans have been hoping the social networking giant would live up to its promise to focus on mobile users, and this week the site answered their wishes, and announced that the newly updated Facebook Mobile is ready for business.

The new mobile site is based on XHP–a PHP extension that augments the language’s syntax so that XML document fragments are treated as valid PHP expressions, Javelin–a Java-based framework for global computing, and WURFL–essentially a configuration file which contains data about every conceivably known wireless device out there.

With over 250 million users–almost half of all Facebook users–accessing the social networking site via a mobile device, it was time to take a closer look at mobile usage and provide a mechanism for those devices to be able to access the site, all in relatively the same fashion.
