NCSA Mosaic 2.7 Source Code Released

Want to see what the web looked in as it appeared in 1993? Now’s your chance, as Alan Dipert recently posted the source code for NCSA Mosaic 2.7 on Github, a code-hosting website.

Mosaic, the first graphical web browser, can be downloaded, compiled and ran on any Linux installation. Currently it runs on Ubuntu fine, with spotty PNG support, but don’t worry–new patches on Github are submitting patches frequently.

The browser was created in the early 90s by a small team ran by Marc Andreessen. They eventually developed the Netscape browser, which led to Mozilla and then Firefox. Sean MacLennan and Alan Wylie helped Dipert recreate Mosaic, and as MacLennan stated on his website, “If you are going to run a 10-year old protocol [HTML], you might as well use a 10-year old browser.”
