It used to be that most universities taught Java in their introductory computer science (CS) classes, but that trend seems to be changing. Stanford University recently added a new version of its first programming course, CS 106, and this version teaches JavaScript instead of Java. According to its website, “[CS 106J] covers the same material as CS 106A but does so using JavaScript, the most common language for implementing interactive web pages, instead of Java.”
Python, often used as a scripting language for Web applications, is also a popular choice for intro to CS courses. In fact, the Association for Computing Machinery, says the majority of the leading CS programs teach Python in their introductory classes.
