IE9 Platform Preview Released, Canvas, Video Tags Confirmed

Jun 24, 2010

The latest release of Internet Explorer 9, the 3rd platform release thus far, confirmed support for HTML 5’s canvas, video and audio tags as specified by the emerging standard. Microsoft demonstrated the web browser’s performance, comparing it to previous versions of IE and taking jabs at Firefox and Chrome.

Rob Mauceri, Microsoft’s principal group program manager for Internet Explorer, stated that “We continue to listen and respond to what matters most to developers, and we’re delivering on the promise that we made to update the preview approximately every eight weeks.”

In the past, browser rivals such as Google, Mozilla, Apple and Opera have pointed out Microsoft’s trend of ignoring the HTML standards process. Recently Microsoft has embraced parts of the standard, and with this release, hope to regain web developer confidence. This release’s support of the canvas tag shows that they are working towards the final release of IE9 with HTML 5 support, with no final date in mind.
