HTML5 To Become Official HTML Version in 2014

Although the work on the HTML5 specification has been ongoing for years, an announcement from the W3C’s HTML Working Group today stated that the HTML5 spec will be completed by 2014, eight years ahead of schedule.

According to Philippe Le Hegaret, the HTML activity leader for the W3C, “We started working [on HTML5] in 2007. “We’re targeting seven years for completing HTML5.” This will be the first official update to the markup language since 1999, when the HTML 4.01 specification was announced.

New features in the HTML5 specification include built-in support for video and audio, a canvas element for 2D graphics, structural lables and more. Work continues on other features, including geolocation, data storage and background processing.
