HTML5 has been talked about as if it will solve all the problems of the web development world, and there is no doubt that is has changed the landscape of the web and will continue to do so for a long time.
Research In Motion (RIM) has always been a supporter of the technology, and its use of HTML5 for the creation of Web apps for its platform may bring it back into competition and out of the world of irrelevance.
Developers who are interested in building apps for RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook or upcoming BlackBerry 10 software will be using HTML5 and related technology (CSS3 and JavaScript) to create games and software for those platforms. As Chris Smith, RIM’s vice president of handheld application platform and tools, recently discussed HTML5, stating that “HTML5 continues to be a primary focus for the BlackBerry platform. It is an important component of our next-generation BlackBerry 10 developer platform and our developers are taking advantage of the power of WebWorks and the ability to write apps for both our smartphones and the BlackBerry PlayBook.”
