HTML and JavaScript-based Video WebPlayer Released from Yahoo

Aug 6, 2011

This week Yahoo announced the beta release of its Yahoo WebPlayer, a new web video player that utilizes HTML and JavaScript–not Flash. The Yahoo WebPlayer supports video and audio from its own Yahoo Video service, as well as YouTube videos, and MP3 and Windows Media Audio (WMA) formats.

The director of Yahoo’s Media Web Apps, Alex Sirota, discussed the ease with which developers can add the WebPlayer to their websites, adding that “After the player is added to a site, when a page loads, the player scans the page contents and adds play buttons next to ‘playable’ items. Playable items could be references to supported media or specific recognized terms, such as movie titles. Once clicked, a play button will open a slick in-page player that will stream all the detected playable items as a unified playlist.”

Yahoo plans to release an API for the Yahoo WebPlayer, enabling developers to create mash-ups, playlists and more. Developers who are interested in trying the Yahoo WebPlayer beta out can find setup and additional information at the Yahoo WebPlayer website.
