For some time, Google has been encouraging website owners to enable the more secure HTTPS by default instead of HTTP. Those efforts appear to be paying off, as Google has revealed that 64 percent of Windows-based Chrome traffic is for HTTPS page loads. A year ago, that figure was 42 percent. In addition, 75 percent of macOS and ChromeOS page loads in the Chrome browser use HTTPS, and 71 of the 100 most popular websites enable HTTPS by default.
“HTTPS is easier and cheaper than ever before, and it enables both the best performance the web offers and powerful new features that are too sensitive for HTTP,” blogged Emily Schechter, a Chrome security product manager.
