Google has released a new open source JPEG encoder called Guetzli that it claims can compress image files 35 percent smaller than other tools. Importantly, Google says the tool doesn’t compromise image quality because it “approximates color perception and visual masking in a more thorough and detailed way than what is achievable by simpler color transforms and the discrete cosine transform.” On the other hand, Guetzli is a little slower than some other JPEG compression algorithms.
