By taking advantage of the computer’s graphics processing unit (GPU), Google’s Chromium web browser is able to accelerate vector-based SVG graphics along with CSS filters. This new ability was discovered during a nightly build of Chromium.
SVG and CSS acceleration is supported by the Chromium browser on Windows, Max, Linux and Chrome OS. Other potential GPU acceleration features are also being developed, such as GPU accelerated painting and GPU compositing. Tests have not been able to find any performance gains through the use of the new features, but currently they are unstable and crashed the WebViz HTML5 benchmark during testing.
