In the last year, based on the HTTP Archive’s top 1000 most visited websites, the web as we know it is overweight–23 percent “fatter” than last year’s web. Images account for the largest portion of the increase, with JavaScript taking up the second position.
While CSS file size has also increased, because they are smaller in general than other files, they haven’t impacted the bottom line. As one is considering the increase in bytes for all of these web pages, the real question is whether it’s even worth worrying about, given the download speed of the average user. Just keep this in mind: if the size increase were to continue for the next five years, the average web page would weigh in at almost 2.5MB, with many even larger than that.
