APIs Fuel The Growth of the App Economy

The future application economy may be not only filled with application programming interfaces (APIs) which enable outside developers to create apps which link to specific core company services–such APIs may become a requirement.

APIs allow companies to accelerate the integration of partners while extending a company’s outward reach to new users. A good example of such an API would be Google’s use of a public API for Google Maps–it enabled outside developers to tap into Google Maps to show business locations and services within their apps.
 
A recent survey by Your Trove focused on how outside developers looked at APIs, and concluded that “Enterprise can harvest significant value in terms of reach, agility and innovation using APIs to increase distribution through a third-party ecosystem. A key finding is that APIs have a major impact on a company’s ability to quickly add partners to their ecosystems with a modest investment.”
