Alfresco Content Management System Adds More Social Features

Jan 28, 2011

The creators of the open source Alfresco content management system (CMS) have recently added social networking functionality to the mix. The latest version, Alfresco Enterprise 3.4, features a redesigned interface that includes status updates, much like those shown on Facebook and Twitter.

Additional new features in the CMS include distributed content replication, content activity streams, enhanced search and folder-based actions for basic workflow. The Alfresco press release mentioned social networking in relation to enterprise apps, noting that “Social computing is becoming a more and more prominent part of enterprise apps like Jive and SharePoint, and these critical programs need a platform on which to build social apps.”

This release provides a new DocLib “portlet” which exposes document libraries to standards-based portals, and uses CMIS to allow integration with Drupal and Lotus Quickr.
