Adobe this week announced that it will be ceasing the development of its mobile Flash player for phones and tablets. They have come to the determination that HTML5 is a better platform for delivery of content across mobile platforms.
As Adobe put it, “HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively. This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms. We are excited about this, and will continue our work with key players in the HTML community, including Google, Apple, Microsoft and RIM, to drive HTML5 innovation they can use to advance their mobile browsers.”
There are currently many mobile devices and tablets that support Flash, but the writing has been on the wall since Apple announced that it would not be supporting Flash on ay of its iOS devices. The popularity of those iOS devices made it apparent that HTML5 was going to become the standard for mobile platforms, and today’s announcement shouldn’t surprise those in the industry.
