Adobe Adds To Web Design Tools With PhoneGap and TypeKit Acquisitions

Oct 4, 2011

This week it was announced that Adobe is acquiring Nitobi, the maker of PhoneGap, and TypeKit, a web-based typography company. By making the acquisitions, Adobe is continuing to position itself as a leader in the web development space, even if Flash is not as popular as it once was.

With most companies making the move to more standardized technologies such as HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript, Adobe has been working on projects and software focused on the technologies. With PhoneGap, Adobe will be buying the ability to add mobile website creation to its web design software’s feature set.

Adobe’s Platform General Manager, Danny Winokur, discussed the purchase of PhoneGap, stating that “PhoneGap is a fantastic solution for developing a broad range of mobile apps using the latest Web standards, and is already integrated with Dreamweaver CS5.5. It’s a perfect complement to Adobe’s broad family of developer solutions, including Adobe AIR, and will allow us to continue to provide content publishers and developers with the best, cutting-edge solutions for creating innovative applications across platforms and devices.”
